For Marketplaces founders

Engineering for
Marketplace Founders

Marketplaces are full-stack products with two distinct user flows, payment routing, dispute resolution, search, and trust signals. That's why most marketplace MVPs ship at 3 months instead of 4 weeks. The cost isn't engineering hours — it's coordination overhead between specialists.

Marketplaces are network-effect businesses. Slow time-to-supply means slow time-to-demand. The supply side has to be live and stocked before demand-side acquisition starts paying off.

Compliance

Tax / 1099 reporting if your marketplace has US sellers — we integrate with Stripe Tax or Avalara. Sales tax nexus is complex and we won't pretend it's not; you need a tax advisor too.

Why marketplaces builds are different

Same engagement model.
Industry-specific defaults.

We don't pretend a generic SaaS stack ships marketplaces at v1. The pain points below are what most builds in your industry get wrong on the first try — we wire them correctly from commit one.

The pain points

What breaks at v1 in marketplaces

Each of these is something we've watched founders get wrong on the first build. We ship the correct version on day one.

01

Two-sided onboarding without two-sided code duplication

Most marketplace MVPs ship two parallel auth/profile/dashboard codebases for buyers and sellers. They diverge fast. We architect a shared base with role-specific surfaces.

02

Stripe Connect done right

Account types, payment routing, KYC requirements, payouts, dispute handling, application fees. Connect is its own product — skipping a feature here means rebuilding it once a dispute happens.

03

Search and matching that actually works

Postgres full-text gets you to 100 listings. Past that you need proper search infrastructure (Typesense, Algolia, or a dedicated Elasticsearch). We choose based on traffic profile, not defaults.

04

Trust signals that match the category

Reviews, verified badges, dispute history. Each category needs a different mix. We don't ship 'reviews' as a generic feature; we ship the trust signal the market needs.

What we ship

Concretely,
by handoff.

The work you'd hand a salaried marketplaces engineer — done end to end on a flat-price engagement.

  • Shared auth/profile base with buyer + seller role surfaces
  • Stripe Connect with proper KYC, payouts, application fees, disputes
  • Search (Postgres FTS / Typesense / Algolia, picked based on scale)
  • Reviews + verified badges + dispute resolution
  • Admin to actually run the marketplace (suspend accounts, refund manually, etc.)

FAQ

Common marketplaces questions

Can you do P2P (Venmo-style) vs marketplace?

+
Different shape. P2P is Stripe Connect with a different account model. We'd quote it separately and recommend a money-transmission lawyer; you may need to be a registered MSB.

How do you handle the chicken-and-egg launch problem?

+
Not our problem to solve — that's market design. We ship the platform; you concentrate supply or demand first. We've seen both strategies work in our portfolio.
