Boston's accelerator infrastructure is some of the deepest in the country — MassChallenge (equity-free, HQ'd here since 2009), Techstars Boston (the network's second-oldest program) and Greentown Labs in Somerville, which still houses about 125 climate-tech startups. Early-stage capital comes from General Catalyst, NextView Ventures, Pillar VC and Flybridge. The Massachusetts biopharma sector alone raised $6.85B across 197 rounds in 2025 — 26.2% of all national biopharma VC, second only to California — and for the second year running, the city of Boston itself out-raised Cambridge, with 71% of funding going to companies outside the MIT/Harvard core. Harvard Innovation Labs has backed 6,500+ ventures that have collectively raised more than $9B, including WHOOP and Rapid SOS. That academic pipeline is exactly why ML and biotech engineers here are priced against research-lab and biopharma offers most seed-stage budgets can't touch.

Boston's biopharma comeback accelerated hard in 2026: Massachusetts biopharma companies raised $3.45B in VC in the first half of the year alone, up 25% year-over-year and the strongest opening half since 2023, and eight Massachusetts biopharma companies went public in that same half — matching the combined 2024-and-2025 total. On the software side, Underscore VC runs a $140M fund exclusively for earliest-stage companies based in or moving to Boston, while MassRobotics just picked its second accelerator cohort — 10 startups out of 130+ applicants, each getting a $100K non-dilutive grant. Local employers are hiring into this too: Klaviyo, headquartered in the Seaport, posted 46.5% more job listings in 2026 than the year before. Good news if you're trying to build a network here — expensive news if you're trying to hire against it.
