Head-to-head

Agency Transfer vs Full Rebuild

A founder calls us when their current agency has missed three deadlines and gone quiet on Slack. They have two options: take possession of the existing codebase and finish what's half-built (transfer, 2 weeks), or throw it all out and rebuild from scratch (3 months, $60K+). Most founders default to rebuild because they're emotionally done with the old project. The math almost always favors transfer.

Why we built this comparison

Both options are real.
One fits your stage.

We don't pretend the other side has no merit. The match depends on your stage, team, runway, and the shape of the build. Read the lanes — pick the side that actually fits.

Two paths

Same outcome. Different routes.

Path A · Full rebuild

Start from scratch, fresh team, fresh stack

$60K–$200K, 3 months minimum

Discovery + design + build + migration

  • ·Fresh codebase, no inherited technical debt
  • ·New team picks the stack they're most productive on
  • ·Customer cutover requires a parallel migration plan
  • ·Three months without product progress
  • ·$60K to $200K depending on scope and team size
  • ·Loses the brand recognition built on the old URLs

When this wins

  • The previous team's code is fundamentally unworkable (rare — under 10% of cases)
  • You're pivoting the product anyway and rebuild aligns with the new direction
  • You have 6+ months of runway and don't need to ship in the meantime

Path B · Start Matter (agency transfer)

Take possession, finish what's half-built, ship in 2 weeks

From $1K, flat-price

14 days from audit to deploy

  • Free 48-hour audit before you decide — no commitment
  • We take possession of the repo and finish the 70% the previous team had half-built
  • Day 3 access cutover — old team locked out, you own everything
  • Zero customer downtime — old stack runs in parallel for 72 hours
  • We give you the literal email script to fire your current agency
  • Most transfers ship in 14 days for $1K to $30K total

When this wins

  • The previous team's code partially works — even if it's messy
  • Customers are paying and you cannot afford 3 months of no shipping
  • You need to ship your originally-promised features, not pivot

Our verdict

Where we'd send you

Honest call, even when the answer isn't us.

Founders default to rebuild because the old project feels poisoned. That's an emotional reaction, not a math one.

The math: another month of $25K to your current agency plus runway burn plus customer churn risk is roughly $40K of monthly drag. Switching is a one-time $1K to $30K. The transfer is cheaper after week one.

There's exactly one situation where rebuild wins: the previous team's code is fundamentally unworkable. We see that in less than 10 percent of audits. We tell you on day two of the free audit, and if rebuild is the right call we'll say so directly.

FAQ

Questions on this comparison

How do I know if my code is fundamentally unworkable?

+
You don't — but we will tell you on day two of the free audit. We look at architecture, schema sanity, secrets hygiene, and whether the code is testable. If the answer is 'rebuild', we say so and refer you to someone who does ground-up builds at that scale.

What if my contract has IP or lock-in clauses?

+
Most engagement contracts assign IP to the client by default. We flag every clause that affects the transfer on day one. We have not seen a transfer killed by IP yet.

Will my current dev team make this difficult?

+
Usually no. We give you the literal termination email script. Most teams disengage cleanly once the final invoice is paid and the notice period is honored.
