Head-to-head

Toptal vs Start Matter

Toptal solves a real problem — vetting freelance talent is hard, and Toptal's screening is genuinely rigorous. What it doesn't solve is the thing founders actually want: a fixed number for a defined scope. You're still paying hourly, which means the incentive structure still rewards billable hours over shipped scope.

Why we built this comparison

Both options are real.
One fits your stage.

We don't pretend the other side has no merit. The match depends on your stage, team, runway, and the shape of the build. Read the lanes — pick the side that actually fits.

Two paths

Same outcome. Different routes.

Path A · Toptal

Vetted freelance marketplace, hourly billing

$60–$150/hour, no minimum

Matched in days, ongoing hourly

  • ·Rigorous vetting — top ~3% of applicants, real screening process
  • ·Wide talent pool across languages and specializations
  • ·No long-term commitment — cancel anytime
  • ·Hourly billing means the total cost is unknown until the work is done
  • ·You manage the freelancer — scope, priorities, code review
  • ·Quality varies freelancer to freelancer even within Toptal's bar

When this wins

  • You need a specific narrow skill for a short, well-defined task
  • You want to try several people before committing to one
  • Your team can manage a contractor day-to-day

Path B · Start Matter

One senior engineer, flat price, we own the scope

$2.5K–$25K per scoped engagement

Start in 7 days, ship in 1–8 weeks

  • One number before we start — you know the total cost on day one
  • We own the scope, not just the hours — the incentive is shipping, not billing
  • Senior engineer with AI-native workflow, not a rate-card match
  • No management overhead — we ask the questions, you answer them
  • Not a marketplace — one specific engineer, vetted by working with you
  • Best when the deliverable is defined enough to flat-price

When this wins

  • You want a fixed number and a fixed scope, not an hourly meter running
  • You don't have bandwidth to manage a contractor's day-to-day
  • The work is a defined build, not open-ended support

Our verdict

Where we'd send you

Honest call, even when the answer isn't us.

Toptal is a genuinely good marketplace if what you need is a specific skill for a bounded task and you're comfortable managing the engagement yourself. The screening is real; the freelancers are generally strong.

The problem shows up when "a few hours of frontend work" becomes forty hours because the scope crept and nobody was incentivized to stop it — that's not a Toptal failure, that's what hourly billing does structurally, on any platform.

If you know the shape of what you're building — an MVP, a feature, a rescue — a flat quote removes that incentive misalignment entirely. If you genuinely don't know the shape yet and need to explore hour by hour, Toptal's model fits better.

FAQ

Questions on this comparison

Is Toptal's vetting actually rigorous?

+
By most accounts yes — Toptal's screening process is real, not just marketing. That's not the question worth asking. The question is whether hourly billing is the right structure for your engagement, independent of who's on the other end of it.

Can I use both?

+
Some founders do — Toptal for ongoing support work with predictable hours, a flat-price engagement for a defined build. The two models solve different problems.
