Head-to-head

Lovable vs Start Matter

Lovable, Bolt, v0, and the no-code AI builders are real now. We use Lovable for landing pages and proof-of-concept demos. We wouldn't ship a SaaS on it. Both statements are true; the question is which side of the line your product is on.

Why we built this comparison

Both options are real.
One fits your stage.

We don't pretend the other side has no merit. The match depends on your stage, team, runway, and the shape of the build. Read the lanes — pick the side that actually fits.

Two paths

Same outcome. Different routes.

Path A · Lovable / Bolt / v0

Prompt-to-app, generated code, vendor platform

$0–$50/month subscription

Hours to working demo

  • ·Generates a working app from a text prompt
  • ·Hosted on the vendor's platform with their conventions
  • ·Code is technically downloadable but the runtime isn't
  • ·Auth, DB, payments — done if the template supports it
  • ·Iteration via prompt — works for landing pages, breaks at custom logic
  • ·Migration cost from generated code to maintainable code is high

When this wins

  • Landing pages, waitlists, marketing experiments
  • Throwaway demos to validate a concept with 5–20 testers
  • Internal tools where being wrong is cheap

Path B · Start Matter

Senior engineer + AI agents, code yours from day one

$5K–$50K flat price

7–60 days to live production

  • Real Next.js + Postgres + Stripe stack, no vendor lock-in
  • Multi-tenant SaaS foundations, proper auth, billing edge cases
  • Code in your GitHub from commit one, infra in your cloud
  • Architecture decisions made by a human senior, not a template
  • Handles non-trivial data models, custom integrations, edge cases
  • Hand off cleanly to your hires when you scale

When this wins

  • You're charging users for the product (not just collecting emails)
  • Multi-tenant or B2B with role-based access
  • Integrations with anything not pre-baked into Lovable's templates
  • You expect to scale past 50–100 paying customers

Our verdict

Where we'd send you

Honest call, even when the answer isn't us.

We've migrated three founders off Lovable in the past quarter. In each case the prototype validated something real, but they hit a wall: a custom integration the template didn't support, a data model that didn't fit Lovable's conventions, or a paying customer asking for SSO that wasn't on the roadmap.

The migration cost — rewriting generated code into maintainable code — was 1.5–2x what building it cleanly from scratch would have been. Lovable was free; the migration cost $25K each time.

Use Lovable for what it's designed for: cheap, fast, throwaway. Don't use it for what it isn't: a foundation you'll scale.

FAQ

Questions on this comparison

Can you build on top of our existing Lovable app?

+
Sometimes. If the data model is sane and the routing is standard, yes. If it's a non-standard Lovable runtime with proprietary components, we'd recommend a clean rewrite — and we'll quote both options honestly.
