LA's startup infrastructure goes back further than the current 'Silicon Beach' branding suggests. Idealab, founded in Pasadena in 1996, has launched 150+ companies with 45+ IPOs or acquisitions, including the studio that pioneered paid search. Crosscut Ventures, which calls itself the city's longest-enduring early-stage VC, now writes $1-3.5M checks into space economy, defense systems and advanced manufacturing — sectors LA quietly leads on. The office real estate backs it up: Google signed a 584,000-sq-ft lease at the former Westside Pavilion, reportedly the biggest single-building office deal in recent LA history, on top of its existing 450,000-sq-ft Playa Vista campus. And even with SpaceX's legal headquarters now in Texas, its Falcon 9 manufacturing and thousands of engineers stayed in Hawthorne — the aerospace gravity here doesn't move easily.
